About Us .

From The Source was set up in 2007 to bring high quality textiles and crafts from Laos to consumers in the UK. Whilst living and working in Laos we discovered the rich heritage of traditional crafts, particularly textile production, and were inspired by meeting Lao craftspeople and using their products. We now import a carefully selected range of gorgeous fashion and interior products, providing an opportunity for a range of producers to export to the UK for the first time. We are a new family business and don't currently have a shop, however you can see us at various shows and markets around the UK, or buy our products online
Laos remains the poorest and least developed country is East Asia and one of the ten poorest countries in the world. Furthermore it is still ravaged by bombs dropped during the US-Vietnam war, during which it gained the odious title of the most heavily bombed country in the world. Around 80% of the population are engaged in subsistence farming, and many people live in remote areas with no access to electricity, sanitation or healthcare facilities. Although Laos has a one-party communist state, its economy has been liberalised and restructured towards capitalism. As Laos inevitably becomes open to the global economy and foreign investment, we believe that this is an important time to develop fair trade initiatives in Laos.
Increasing demands are being made on Laos' abundant natural resources, and there is a big demand for Lao timber and a growing number of large hydropower projects. We believe in adding value to raw materials by encouraging the production of high quality textiles and craft products in Lao communities, often in rural areas. We encourage the organic production of textiles and the use of dyes derived from local, natural sources. From The Source aims to provide opportunities for sustainable development in Laos that help to protect the environment and preserve traditional skills and lifestyles.

"Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers - especially in the South. Fair Trade is more than just trading: it proves that greater justice in world trade is possible. It highlights the need for change in the rules and practice of conventional trade and shows how a successful business can also put people first."
IFAT - the global network of Fair Trade Organizations.

We have personally met all of our producers and are assured that people involved in the production of our products are paid a fair wage, are treated with respect and have good working conditions. We deal with a range of small businesses, cooperatives, artisans and craftspeople, and aim to achieve recognised fair trade status.
