Afghanistan - development through fair trade

From The Source have teamed up with Yorkshire based charity The Roddy Scott Foundation to build new relationships with fair trade producers in Afghanistan. Sourcing products made by women in good working conditions is an excellent opportunity to contribute towards building a stable civil society and economic development in this war-torn country.

Afghanistan has a fantastic tradition of weaving and embroidery, and these are respected women's skills. By finding markets for Afghan products in the UK we can help create skilled employment and livelihoods.

We source products from an independent, not for profit Afghan NGO that aims to create a network of Afghan women in textile production. This organisation grew from the DACAAR Sewing Centre that worked with over 3000 Afghan families in refugee camps along the Pakistani border from 1984. In addition we work with a Japanese resident designing original textile products and providing employment for more that 20 Afghan women.

From The Source believe the fair trade movement has an important role to play in overcoming poverty in conflict-affected areas, and we connect some of the most marginalized communities in the world with the international market for fair trade products.
